From OEC to OFW ID

(This is an opinion on the article DOLE scraps OEC, replaces it with OFW ID from GMA News on 3 Jul 2017.)

Finally after the long wait, it’s here – Goodbye OEC!

For years, OFWs (Overseas Filipino Workers) had endured in securing OECs every single time they come home to the Philippines. Hours and hours of stress from long waiting time, fees and other stuff (along with incompetence) consumed their vacation time.

OEC was usually a reason for many OFWs not to spend their vacation time in the Philippines.

They’ve been asking for a long time, when will this end?

Now here’s a huge reason for merriment!

They will introduce instead a new OFW ID system. To top it off, it’s for free!

The question still remains, when will the current administration push through with the promised new government department that would exclusively for OFWs’ concerns?

This idea has been floated long before but not much was done to lay its foundations.

With the scrapping of OEC and the coming introduction of the OFW ID system, we realize they’re getting things right. For all the media and social media noise that we constantly have to deal with about our current government, we can see that there’s progress to make things better.

The only thing that I’m still doubtful about is the implementation.

Will the people serving within those agencies be able to echo in their jobs the same commitment of the administration?

Would they be able to sustain this for years to come?

I sincerely hope so.

Juan dela Cruz have been dealing with incompetence, red tape and corruption in our government offices for years. I think it’s high time for change to finally happen.

Scrapping OEC is just a start. More improvements for the Philippines, please.

By the way, thank you very much!
